Andrealphus, Marquis of Angles is a spirit that appears in dNetHack and notdNetHack.

Ritual, seal and taboo

Andrealphus's seal must be drawn in the corner of a room, and you must #chat to the seal such that the corner is across from you.

To remain bound to Andrealphus, a character must not dig through walls - digging through rough stone is allowed.

Mark

The shadow of a character that has Andrealphus bound takes on the semblance of depth, which cannot be seen from a distance; this can be hidden by standing in a dark square.

Benefits

While Andrealphus is bound, he grants teleport control and skill in escape spells.

Andrealphus's active powers are as follows:

  • Transdimensional Ray: Fire an invisible beam that passes through walls, teleports struck monsters, and deals 1d5 dice of damage to them.
  • Teleport: Hungerless teleportation.

Andrealphus's passive powers are as follows:

  • Angle-fighter: When standing in a corner, the character gains a (XL/2)+1 bonus to AC.
  • Strange angles: The character can always fit through narrow openings, regardless of size or current carried weight.

As a monster

In notdNetHack, Andrealphus, B, also appears as a monster that can be summoned by an Illithanachronounbinder. He is an oviparous and carnivorous birdlike animal that can be seen via infravision.

Andrealphus has a bite attack, as well as a claw attack that teleports targets similar to the quantum mechanic.

Like many summoned spirits, Andrealphus cannot be tamed.

Generation

Andrealphus is first generated when summoned from his seal by an Illithanachronounbinder. He is always created hostile, and is not a valid form for normal polymorph.

Andrealphus is generated with a sensor pack and a can of grease.

Andrealphus does not leave a corpse upon death.

Strategy

Below this point, there are major spoilers for the Illithanachronounbinder role. They can be accessed by selecting the "Role spoiler" tab.

Andrealphus moves at a very fast 20 speed, but his attacks are not nearly as threatening as those of Ahazu or Amon, and binding Andrealphus to summon him will grant teleport control, which can deal with his teleporting attack.

If Andrealphus is killed after being summoned, he can be encountered again in the Void, a branch accessed by opening the high altar of Ilsensine the Fallen as an Illithanachronounbinder using the invoke effect of The Elder Cerebral Fluid. Andrealphus is generated along with many other spirits of the near void on the first floor of the branch, and is generated with the "whispers" template, which makes him nonliving.

Encyclopedia entry

"Angles and curves multiply about me. I perceive great segments of time through curves. There is curved time, and angular time. The beings that exist in angular time cannot enter curved time. It is very strange."

His voice had risen to a scream. "Frank, Frank, a terrible and unspeakable deed was done in the beginning. Before time, the deed, and from the deed—"

He had risen and was hysterically pacing the room. "The seeds of the deed move through angles in dim recesses of time. They are hungry and athirst!"
